I have some friends who started a small business. They went into the partnership with someone from another state who owned part of the shares of the business and was somewhat difficult to work with. In general, he was doing pretty well until he suggested they install a security camera in the store. He tried to convince the partners that it was for security but the reality was (the perception was) that we was ultimately trying to “spy” on them. That didn’t make for a very good relationship and there was less and less trust between the partners. Eventually, they were able to buy out the out-of-state partner and move on with their business. They have been really successful since then and were glad they made the decision. While they still might install a security system at a later date, they didn’t feel like it was the right time or the right reasons. For now, they are focusing on marketing and building a sense of community around their business and will deal with their security issues at a later date. Thankfully, they are in a small community where burglary and crime are not abundant. However, they recognize the importance of investing in their security for their business so they will consider it in the future. They are budgeting for it presently and hope to have a system installed in the next year. Their neighbors were able to recommend a company from Denver that is perfect for the job and they have shopped around to find the right system for the right price.
